Ayrton Senna lined up at the start in his Lotus 97T from the John Player Special Team Lotus. Senna secured pole position in qualifying and led the race. In difficult weather conditions, the Brazilian showed an impressive driving performance and secured an unchallenged start-finish victory. It was his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory and, together with the fastest race lap, also his first "Grand Slam" in a Formula 1 race. He was able to repeat this feat three more times in the rest of his career.
