During the rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, Michael Schumacher held a commanding lead and was firmly on course for victory. On lap 25 or 26, he caught up to David Coulthard, who was about to be lapped. Coulthard lifted off the throttle while still on the racing line to let Schumacher pass; however, due to spray and poor visibility, Schumacher realized this too late and crashed into the rear of the McLaren. The impact tore the front wing, the right front suspension, and the front wheel clean off Schumacher's Ferrari—forcing him to limp the car back to the pits, effectively driving on just three wheels.
Following the incident, Schumacher was absolutely furious; he stormed into the McLaren garage, convinced that Coulthard had intentionally endangered him or tried to impede his progress. The scene went down in history as a legendary moment. Later, Coulthard admitted that his actions during the lapping maneuver had been unfortunate, even if the crash itself was not intentional.
