In the 1980 Rally Monte Carlo, the German Walter Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer competed in the Fiat 131 Abarth. With a time of 8:42:20 hours, the duo left the competition behind and won the first round of the 1980 World Rally Championship. At the end of the season, Röhrl and Geistdörfer were also to win the WRC title.
